The Great Human Race is a community event that is designed to strengthen the capacity of the voluntary sector. The event offers the necessary infrastructure to all non-profit organizations so that they may use it as a platform for fundraising. All aspects of event planning, logistics, promotion, production and administration are provided to community agencies allowing them to focus on attracting stakeholders to participate and raise pledges on the organizations' behalf. The Great Human Race generates operating funds through registration fees, sponsorships and withholding 20% of all pledges collected as an administration fee.

The Great Human Race is also designed to encourage volunteerism and citizenship. All individuals are empowered to walk or run on behalf of the cause of their choice.

Approximately 200 community agencies and 2,500 citizens participated in the 2007 Great Human Race raising more than $250,000.

The Great Human Race is a community initiative of United Way and the YMCA of Edmonton. Each supportive of strong communities and families, the partnership is a unique collaboration. The event is a natural partnership, bringing together the goals of United Way around building citizen engagement and community capacity with that of the YMCA around and the growth of individuals in mind, body and spirit.
